Tough Grace: Mental Illness as a Spiritual Path
Tuesday, October 26 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
Presenter: Alice Holstein, Ed.D.
Investment: $5 (scholarships available)
We tend to think of the spiritual path as pious and easy, but there is much evidence that it is instead full of tests and trials and suffering. This session will highlight how mental illness can be reframed to honor suffering, understand the hero’s journey and reap the rewards of spiritual gifts or lessons. Both those with mental illness and their loved ones will feel affirmed and inspired when they reframe their experiences in this light.
Alice Holstein, Ed.D., has struggled with manic depression for some 20 years, 12 of them horrific, before establishing a solid recovery. She works as a peer support specialist in the mental health field, also receiving the 2010 “shooting star” award from the Greater La Crosse Area Mental Health Coalition. Alice is a popular public speaker and is currently writing about mental illness as a spiritual path. |
